Grid tie
Grid tie systems in Ontario are now a reality. Net metering is available now in all areas of Ontario and consumers are allowed to generate part or all of the electricity they need from renewable resources such as solar electric or wind turbines.
Utilities must accept any excess power you generate. If you generate more than you need, that amount is used to reduce your bill to the "net" amount. Simply stated you consume 1000 KWH from the utility, but you send back 800 KWH, then you will be billed for only 200 KWH. This also reduces your transmission and debt retirement costs. Credits expire after 1 year if not used.
FIT and MicroFIT Contracts are a different option for connection to the Ontario grid. The Ontario Power Authority will buy all the power you produce at a premium rate. You then purchase the power you require for your home from the utility at current normal rates. Solar sells for 80.2 cents per KWh and wind sells for 13.5 cents per KWH more information at www.microfit.powerauthority.on.ca
Some businesses in Northern Ontario may qualify for funding through NOHFC. Visit their website www.nohfc.com . Search Northern Energy Programs for details. We can help you with the applications.
Grid tie systems can also be designed with batteries for those who require backup power when the utility goes down. (See Backup Power) This option allows key items within your household to keep operating from the battery storage.
