Batteries
Batteries are built for specific tasks. It’s important to pick the right type and size.
- Starting batteries experience very short life in deep cycle applications.
- RV & Marine batteries are a compromise battery, slightly thicker plates and a recommended discharge to 20%.
- True deep cycle batteries have a depth of discharge of 50% to 80%. They have very thick plates and warranties up to 10 years.
- Sealed-gel and AGM batteries are ideal for systems where no maintenance is desired. Be prepared to pay about 60% more for the same capacity.
- NiCad have 4 times the life but 10 times the cost, and they are very difficult to recycle.
Battery questions:
Quality batteries cost more initially but over their longer life actually cost less per cycle.
Sealed gel batteries only require annual connection check up.
All deep cycle batteries are contained in an enclosure that is vented to the outside of the home. Sealed gel batteries do not need venting.
Service contracts are available.
